Looks like Paris-style bike sharing is coming to Denver for the Democratic National Convention! And, the program may stick around.
An enviro friend sends this along:
I wanted to update you on the progress that has been made on a bike sharing program in Denver. A coalition of funding, action, and planning partners has been put together and met twice on the topic. Currently we have bi-weekly meetings scheduled at the Wellington Webb building – below is a quick bullet list of highlights.
- At present there isn’t enough money, but apparently Humana and another partner are promising large contributions – the DNC committee is confident this will pan out.
- They are looking at a model similar to Paris for the check-in/out system. This model will call for GPS tracking to be installed on all bikes with credit card check-out procedures (see http://www.bikesbelong.org/node/215659 for a video on the Paris model).
- Current numbers estimate 1,000 bikes for the convention, with 250 bikes remaining as a legacy in Denver.
- Finally the committee is creating a map of suggestions for bike traffic improvements for Downtown that will be submitted to the appropriate party in the City.
Bike Denver [. . .] is doing a lot of legwork on the project.
